A Agência Reguladora de Medicamentos e Produtos de Saúde do Reino Unido (MHRA) aprovou nesta terça-feira, 23, o medicamento para perda de peso da Novo Nordisk, Wegovy, com o propósito de contribuir para a prevenção de problemas cardiovasculares graves em adultos com sobrepeso e obesidade.
Trata-se da primeira vez que um medicamento para obesidade baseado em GLP-1 é prescrito para essa finalidade no país, seguindo uma aprovação semelhante pela FDA dos EUA em março deste ano, segundo informações do site da CNBC.
A vice-diretora de medicamentos inovadores da MHRA, Shirley Hopper, ressaltou a importância desta ação no combate aos efeitos da obesidade:
"Estamos confiantes de que os padrões regulatórios adequados de segurança, qualidade e eficácia para a aprovação deste medicamento foram atendidos", disse Hopper em um comunicado.
E acrescentou: "Essa opção de tratamento que previne doenças cardíacas e acidentes vasculares cerebrais é um passo importante no combate às sérias consequências da obesidade".
Tratamento para obesidade
Segundo a MHRA, a decisão marca um progresso importante na abordagem dos riscos de saúde relacionados à obesidade, trazendo uma nova opção de tratamento que vai além do controle de peso.
A aprovação é apoiada pelos resultados do ensaio "SELECT", um estudo de fase final publicado em agosto de 2023.
